Les Mills Classes

Sep 11

As I have posted in the past I’m trying to get to the gym on a regular basis and lose some weight. One thing that is helping me do that is taking some Les Mills classes at the gym.

Les Mills is series of high energy, choreographed, group exercise classes that gets your blood pumping.

The first Les Mills class I took was RPM (cycling). It was just by chance that I took it as it was just about to start as I arrived at the gym so I thought to myself, why not. It was just my luck that it happened to be the 75 minute version instead of the standard 50 minute version. I didn’t know what to expect but I went through with it anyways and I was glad I did.

Each class is choreographed to take you through various challenges and is accompanied by licensed music (past and present hits). Though each class is choreographed it doesn’t get stale as new routines are created every three months. The instructors also receive training and are great at keeping you motivated through the workout, even if you think you won’t make it.

The second class I took was BodyPump (this class incorporates a barbell into the exercises). I didn’t enjoy this class as much as RPM, mainly because it consisted of a lot of lunges and squats (my two least favourite exercises). But, I must admit it did get me doing things I wouldn’t normally do on my own.

The third class I took was BodyCombat (an aerobic exercise routine that incorporates moves from various fighting and martial arts disciplines) and it was my favourite by far. This class is super high energy and was challenging for me but I enjoyed every minute of it. I don’t think I sweated as much as I did during that class than I ever have in the past. I also felt it in the morning as nearly every muscle in my body was sore.

There are many other Les Mills classes you can choose from if any of those don’t appeal to you so if you have the chance to take a Les Mills class I would highly recommend it. You won’t be disappointed.

Halifax Jazz Fest

Aug 06

I’m a big lover of music, especially music that isn’t just your standard drums, guitar, and keyboards, so it’s a little surprising that I’ve never been to the Atlantic Jazz Fest in the 10 years that I’ve been living in Halifax. This year however, I decided to change that so I volunteered for 16 hours over three days and I enjoyed every minute of it.

We had beautiful weather for the whole festival this year and everyone really enjoyed themselves. I got to experience some great music that ranged from experimental jazz, big band, and more. It was also great to see the range of ages of the people who were enjoying the show. From 9 to 90 everyone was having a good time.

Even if you’re not a big fan of jazz I would still encourage you to come out next year for some of the free shows just to experience the great vibe of the crowds. Also, with the wide ranging styles of jazz being performed at the festival you just may find something you like.

Alice in Wonderland & Shakespeare by the Sea

Aug 06

July has been a quite busy month so I’m a bit late getting this post up. My first night volunteering with Shakespeare by the Sea was on July 1st. It also happened to be their opening night for the season and were performing their version of Alice in Wonderland.

I wasn’t really sure what to expect since this was my first time actually seeing a SBTS play. I was blown away by the quality of the performances. Everyone involved did an amazing job and it is a great show for young and old alike. Having had such a great experience volunteering with SBTS the first time I’m excited to go back again later this week.

If you haven’t already you should go on down and catch a show.

Shakespeare by the Sea

Jun 26

Recently I decided to get more active in the city and start volunteering my time. Right now I’m going to volunteer with Shakespeare by the Sea. Tonight was our first volunteer meeting and everyone was already having a good time. I think I’m going to like volunteering here.

For those of you who don’t know, Shakespeare by the Sea is a not-for-profit theatre group that performs works of Shakespeare (and other classical and modern pieces) outdoors at the Cambridge Battery in Point Pleasant Park in Halifax.

This season they’ll be performing Alice in Wonderland, The Merry Wives of Windsor, and Titus Andronicus. Shows start at 7pm and are by donation ($15 suggested). I’ll be volunteering for the very first show of the season, Alice in Wonderland, this Sunday, July 1st. In case of rain, shows are held in the Park Place Theatre located in the Shakespeare by the Sea building in the Point Pleasant Park parking lot. So come on out and enjoy the show!

Early Morning Workout

Jun 26

Today I thought I’d try an early morning workout. Surprisingly getting up wasn’t an issue. In fact I got up 20 minutes before my alarm was due to go off. I like the vibe of the gym early in the morning. It’s much more laid back as people just want to get in, do their workout, and get out, unlike during the busy after work period where all the bros show off. In other news, it’s only been three days and I’ve already lost 1 pound which I’m quite pleased about. I hope I can keep this up.

Two Days in a Row

Jun 25

I made it to the gym again today and worked out longer than yesterday. So far, so good. It was a bit busier today than yesterday so I’m going to try going before work instead of after.

Getting Healthy

Gym expand

Gym

In 2008/2009 I decided to lose some weight so I joined a gym. For about a year and a half I was doing very well. I had managed to lose about 45 pounds and ran in two half-marathons. Sadly however, due to certain circumstances I put all that weight back on and am back to 230 pounds, just shy of my original weight of 235 pounds. That was a hard sentence to write, but, that is going to change. Starting today I am going to eat healthier and work out more often. In fact, I’ve already been to the gym today and it felt good. One thing I’ve found though is I need to really work on my cardio. I can’t run at the same speeds as I used to. With that, I’m setting three goals for myself:

1. Lose a total of 30 pounds  by Christmas – 182 days remaining.

2. Lose a total of 50 pounds by April 2013 – 280 days remaining.

3. Run a full marathon by July 2013 – 371 days remaining.

You can also help me reach my goals if you see me out-and-about by letting me know if I’m about to make a bad food decision or just by giving a few words of encouragement.

Finally, I hope to be held accountable by publicly journaling my weight loss journey, so if you see me slacking off please let me know. Thank you in advance. Only 50 pounds to go.
